Markdown for Agents (Cloudflare)

Markdown for Agents is Cloudflare's server-side "readable" primitive for the Agentic Internet: it lets agents read websites "with fewer tokens and less bandwidth" by serving content in a form native to how models consume it, rather than HTML built for human rendering (Source: sources/2026-08-06-cloudflare-building-an-open-agentic-internet).

Why it matters

An agent doesn't render CSS, see the hero image, or click ads. Every human-oriented HTML tag served to an agent is "not only a waste of compute but also a pollution of the context window the agent then has to pay to ignore." Serving Markdown strips that overhead: lower bandwidth for the domain owner, fewer tokens (and lower cost) for the agent.

Server vs client split

Readability is addressed from two sides in Cloudflare's model:

  • Server side — Markdown for Agents: the origin/edge serves low-token, agent-native content.
  • Client side — Kitesurf: an agent-oriented, per-request browser that avoids human-UI bloat.

Both feed the same goal: the fewer tokens and bytes an agent burns, the better — and cleaner content improves what the agent can then be discovered for (via AI Search) and do (via WebMCP).
