Redfish¶
What it is¶
Redfish is a standard protocol for hardware management developed by the DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force). It delivers vendor-agnostic RESTful APIs for managing bare-metal servers, allowing standardized control across heterogeneous hardware from different vendors.
Through Redfish, an orchestrator can execute:
- BIOS configuration (define and apply golden templates),
- Firmware updates (including NIC firmware),
- Power management (remote reboot, shutdown, power cycling),
- Health monitoring (processor, memory, disk health checks).
Why it matters¶
Distributed on-premises fleets mix hardware vendors, so per-vendor management tooling is a primary source of inconsistency and manual toil. Redfish is the vendor-agnostic hardware API that lets a single centralized orchestration engine automate bare-metal lifecycle management across thousands of geographically dispersed servers without per-vendor special-casing.
