Pinterest Related Pins¶
Definition¶
Related Pins (RP) is Pinterest's contextual-recommendation surface — Pins recommended based on the current Pin the user is viewing. One of three Pinterest ads surfaces (with Home Feed and Search).
Role in the unified ads engagement model¶
Related Pins has a substantially higher cost profile than HF and SR, so Pinterest's staged model unification (Source: sources/2026-03-03-pinterest-unifying-ads-engagement-modeling-across-pinterest-surfaces) unified HF + SR first and deferred RP. RP unification is named as the next milestone — "the primary challenge will be model efficiency, so we will integrate additional efficiency improvements to meet our performance targets and achieve this goal."
In the Pinterest Ads Engagement Model at time of post, RP does not yet have a tower tree in the unified model — it still runs on a separate per-surface model. The target architecture includes a planned RP tower tree alongside HF and SR.
Cost profile distinction¶
The post's explicit statement on why RP was deferred:
"Since the cost of Related Pins (RP), Home Feed (HF), and Search (SR) differ substantially, we first unified Home Feed and Search (similar CUDA throughput characteristics) and expanded to Related Pins only after throughput and efficiency work stabilized."
CUDA throughput is the sequencing axis: HF and SR are cheap enough to merge first, RP needs the efficiency work (DCNv2 projection, fused kernels, TF32, request-level broadcasting) stabilised before its traffic can be carried.
Caveats¶
- Stub — RP's full architecture (retrieval, ranking, two-tower model topology, context-Pin embedding, etc.) is not ingested. This page is bounded to RP's role as a Pinterest ads surface in the 2026-03-03 engagement-modeling post.
- Why RP is more expensive is not specified — the post asserts the cost differential but doesn't enumerate the specific architectural differences driving it (candidate-set size, feature set, sequence length, embedding dim).
- RP unification is future work — not yet shipped as of the 2026-03-03 post.
