moxygen

moxygen (github.com/facebookexperimental/moxygen) is Meta's open-source implementation of Media over QUIC (MoQ). It provides the three MoQ roles — publisher, subscriber, and relay — in one library, integrates with Meta's mvfst QUIC stack, and exposes hooks for custom media handlers so applications can plug in their own encode/decode/packaging logic above the MoQ framing.

moxygen is the client-side vehicle by which Meta shipped MoQ as the Instagram Live ingest transport across four apps on iOS and Android. (Source: sources/2026-10-12-meta-shipping-media-over-quic-at-meta-scale-for-instagram-live-ingest)

What it provides

  • All three MoQ roles in one library — publisher (pushes named Tracks), subscriber (requests Tracks by name), and relay (caches + forwards objects without parsing the payload). The same library can be the client that ingests a broadcast or a relay node in the fan-out network.
  • mvfst integration — rides Meta's mvfst QUIC implementation rather than reimplementing the transport, so it inherits QUIC's per-stream independence, fast setup, and connection migration.
  • Custom media-handler hooks — application-specific media handling attaches at defined extension points, keeping the MoQ framing/delivery concerns separate from codec/packaging concerns.

Role in Meta's Instagram Live rollout

A MoQ publisher built on moxygen was integrated into Meta's apps; a single config parameter chooses MoQ or RUSH for a given broadcast, so the transport can be flipped per-broadcast and the rollout can be driven server-side without waiting on app-version adoption. moxygen produces MoQ frames that are then translated to RUSH at dedicated edge endpoints, so the existing backend consumes the familiar format during the migration (an edge-translation step). Relationship to other MoQ implementations

  • moq-rs — Cloudflare's Rust MoQ implementation (CLI moq-pub / moq-sub). moxygen is the Meta-side C++ counterpart, embedded in production mobile apps rather than shipped as standalone CLI tools.
  • Both implement the same IETF MoQ Transport draft, so interoperability across independent implementations is itself a goal of moving to the open standard.
