MonetDB¶
Definition¶
MonetDB is a pioneering open-source columnar analytical database developed at CWI (Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica) in Amsterdam. With its X100 query-execution engine (later commercialized as Vectorwise), it is a foundational system in the lineage of vectorized query execution: it rebuilt query processing around batches of values small enough to stay in CPU cache once the query-processing bottleneck moved off the disk and into the CPU — cache behaviour, branch prediction, and superscalar pipelines. Why it matters for this wiki¶
MonetDB/X100 is the intellectual and personnel ancestor of DuckDB. DuckDB's creators, Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, were researchers in the same CWI lab, and carried its deep focus on getting everything possible out of a single CPU into DuckDB's design. It is a canonical example of changing hardware physics: MonetDB was a response to the bottleneck shifting from disk I/O to in-CPU efficiency, motivating cache-resident vectorized execution rather than tuple-at-a-time interpretation. - sources/2026-08-26-allthingsdistributed-duckdb-and-the-changing-physics-of-analytics — Named as prior CWI work: "the MonetDB and X100 work took advantage of the fact that the bottleneck in query processing had quietly moved off the disk and into the CPU… to rebuild query execution around batches of values small enough to stay in cache." Cited as the lab and lineage DuckDB's creators came from.
