Dayco Telecom (AS21980)

Dayco Telecom is a Venezuelan telecommunications company, operating AS AS21980.

Role in the 2026-01-02 BGP anomaly

Dayco Telecom was the originator of the prefixes involved in the 01-02 AS8048 route leak. All affected prefixes belong to the 200.74.224.0/20 subnet and are originated by AS21980.

Dayco Telecom is a customer of AS8048 (CANTV). This is the load-bearing detail Cloudflare's post hinges on: because AS8048 is already AS21980's upstream provider, any interception motive for re-leaking AS21980's prefixes through another path is structurally absent.

From BGPKIT monocle's as2rel query:

│ 8048 │ 21980 │ 9.9% │ 0.6% │ 9.4% │ 0.0% │

Only 9.9% of public route collectors see the two as adjacent at all, but of those that do, almost all show AS8048 as the upstream — high-confidence customer-provider direction with AS8048 as the provider.

Victim, but of what?

Dayco Telecom's prefixes were taken and re-advertised without its consent, but the effect on Dayco is minor: the leaked paths were so heavily prepended (8048 x9) that receivers largely kept preferring the non-leaked paths through AS8048's direct transit. The leak is more properly described as a Type 1 hairpin leak between AS8048's two providers, with AS21980's prefixes as the subject matter rather than AS21980 being the harmed party.
