Cloudflare Stream

Cloudflare Stream is Cloudflare's managed broadcasting / video platform (cloudflare.com/products/stream) — "a powerful broadcasting platform that, for many of our customers, just works." It handles video ingest, storage, encoding, and delivery for both live and hosted (video-on-demand) content, exposing the media I/O surfaces that higher-level systems build on (Source: sources/2026-10-02-cloudflare-streamline-custom-video-pipelines-with-cloudflare-stream-and-workers).

Role

Stream is the managed-service anchor that custom pipelines compose with rather than replace. In the Streamline reference architecture, Stream provides:

  • Stream Live inputs addressable over RTMPS — a pipeline can pull RTMPS playback from one Stream Live input and publish RTMPS output to another (e.g. to record or re-broadcast a modified livestream).
  • Hosted videos over HLS — a pipeline can pull a Stream HLS manifest (https://videodelivery.net/<id>/manifest/video.m3u8) and its segments to use an existing hosted video as input, including its embedded closed-caption subtitles.

The RTMPS input/output keys are secrets: Streamline treats them as never to be leaked to a controlling application, resolving a named profile to the real key inside the trusted Worker before contacting the media engine (Source: sources/2026-10-02-cloudflare-streamline-custom-video-pipelines-with-cloudflare-stream-and-workers).

Positioning

  • "Just works" managed tier for standard broadcasting/VOD; the point of Streamline is to show how to go beyond the managed path when a customer needs bespoke processing (dynamic annotations, burned-in subtitles, overlays) that the managed product doesn't do directly.
  • Composes with Workers + Containers + Durable Objects as the input source and output sink of a custom pipeline, which performs the transcoding/encoding work in between.
