Brotli¶
Brotli is a general-purpose lossless compression algorithm developed at
Google, widely deployed as an HTTP Content-Encoding (br) for web assets. It
typically achieves higher compression ratios than gzip on text at the cost of
more CPU, and ships a built-in static dictionary tuned for web content.
Role on this wiki: stub — the entry exists to anchor comparison points made in other sources. Deeper Brotli internals (context modeling, static dictionary, quality levels) are not yet described by an ingested source.
As a benchmark baseline for zstd¶
In Cloudflare's Cache Transcoding prototype, Brotli is the codec Zstandard is measured against: Cloudflare cites earlier browser-compression testing where zstd compressed 42% faster than Brotli while producing nearly the same file size, and produced files 11.3% smaller than gzip at comparable speed. Those relative numbers are why the cache- transcoding prototype chose zstd (level 3) for a feature that must keep both encode and decode fast across a large fraction of traffic. Brotli also appears on the wiki as one of the delta-compression encodings
(dcb, delta-Brotli) in
Cloudflare Shared Dictionaries.
