AWS HealthLake¶
What it is¶
AWS HealthLake is a HIPAA-eligible managed service that ingests health data from disparate sources — EHR systems, lab portals, imaging archives, medication histories — and normalizes it into standardized FHIR R4 resources, producing a unified, queryable clinical data store. It provides the FHIR-native data foundation that downstream analytics and AI systems read from.
Role in the clinical-trial screening architecture¶
In the Clinical Trial Eligibility and Safety Agent architecture, HealthLake is Step 1 (data ingestion): it consolidates fragmented patient records into FHIR R4 and exposes them for retrieval. The detailed screening agent then pulls the specific FHIR resource each criterion needs — Observation for labs, Condition for diagnoses, MedicationStatement for medications — rather than re-joining raw source systems. HealthLake being FHIR-native is what makes the downstream knowledge graph and per-criterion evidence matrix tractable. Security posture¶
HealthLake is HIPAA-eligible with encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and SMART on FHIR authorization. In the reference architecture it sits behind AWS PrivateLink to keep clinical traffic off the public internet, contributing to the system's defense-in-depth posture.
