AWS Capabilities by Region

AWS Capabilities by Region is AWS's published Regional availability dataset — a machine-readable catalog of which services, features, API operations, and CloudFormation resource types exist in each AWS Region, with status (Available / Planning / Not Expanding) and projected launch dates. It is the authoritative source that drives multi-Region architecture, data-residency, and expansion-planning decisions. Access paths

Three documented ways to consume the data:

  1. Explorer page — the AWS Capabilities by Region page (builder.aws.com/build/capabilities/explore) for interactive exploration.
  2. Amazon S3 access point — a public S3 access point (arn:aws:s3:...:accesspoint/aws-capabilities-public, hosted in AWS-managed account 686591367145) for pipeline integration. See "Building automated AWS Regional availability checks with Amazon S3."
  3. AWS Knowledge MCP server — query the dataset through MCP.

Catalog files include products.json, apis.json, and cfn_resources.json. The dataset spans 200+ services across 35+ Regions. Organizations with access to additional partitions can incorporate those sources for a unified cross-partition view (arranged via an AWS representative).

Relationship to the VPC-local tools

The dataset is the source of truth that the self-hosted tools pull into the customer account:

  • Capability Insights for AWS — a scheduled Lambda reads this S3 access point every 24h and mirrors it into an in-account website bucket, so the dashboard runs inside the customer VPC with the published dataset as its only external dependency.
  • Workload Analysis — intersects these primary catalogs with the account's own CloudTrail/CloudFormation footprint to produce a personalized view.
